English course is an important course in China’s compulsory education stage, but the current English classroom management in elementary school in rural areas has problems such as low teaching efficiency and students’ lack of interest in learning English. The subject specificity of English subject and the fact that elementary school students have stages of physical and mental development make it more difficult to manage English classrooms in elementary school. In this paper, the author takes 701 students and 31 English teachers in Z central school as the research subjects, and uses a combination of questionnaires, interviews, classroom observations and other research methods to conduct an in-depth investigation of English classroom management in rural elementary school. The authors outlined and analyzed a series of problems in classroom management in rural elementary school in the following four dimensions:classroom environment, teaching, time, and discipline management, and put forward corresponding suggestions and countermeasures in the context of their own teaching practice. This study specifically addresses the following three questions: What problems exist in the current English classroom management in rural elementary school? What are the reasons for these problems? What are the strategies applicable to the current English classroom management in elementary school in rural areas? The results of the empirical study show that the current problems in English classroom management in elementary school in rural areas are:First,Classroom seating and space decorations are not arranged with the characteristics of the English subject. The psychological environment of students in the English classroom is depressing, and the frequency of teacher-student interaction is insufficient.Second, the teaching management in English classrooms is old-fashioned,the teaching process is dull, the use of modern tools such as multimedia is not frequent enough, too many Chinese lecture terms and other problems still exist, and there is an imbalance in the ratio of teacher-student speaking time.Third, the concept of classroom time management is not enough for English teachers in elementary school in rural areas, and the situation of delaying the end of class is common;teachers take longer time to speak in class, and students lack enough time for discussion and communication.Fourth, there is a single approach to discipline management in English classes.Students’ disciplinary violations are not handled in an appropriate way,and classroom rules are not formulated with students’ consensus. To address the above problems, the author proposes the following solution strategies, guided by relevant theories: First,Adjust the seating order.Set up the classroom with an English context to create a relaxing environment for students.Second, design flexible teaching steps.Consider the physical and mental development of elementary school students, use multimedia resources, and increase the use of English language in the classroom to optimize classroom time management.Third, teachers should do a good job of time control in the English classroom.Fourth, the discipline management in the classroom should be more democratic,so that students can participate in the formulation and management of classroom rules, and give care to the bad students to build a more harmonious teacherstudent relationship.
