Mother’s education is an important part of family education in ancient China.It plays an important role in the growth of children.Mother’s words and deeds affect the development of children’s behavior habits,character and other aspects.This paper focuses on the maternal education in the Northern Song Dynasty,expounds the concept,form,content and measures of maternal education in the Song Dynasty,discusses the impact of maternal education on children and the society in the Northern Song Dynasty,and is of great significance for modern people to further understand the general situation of maternal education in the Northern Song Dynasty and the development trend in the history of family education in ancient China.This article will discuss from the following four parts:The first part combs the concept of maternal religion from the pre-Qin to the Northern Song Dynasty.According to the historical data,the concept of maternal education in different periods shows a trend of change,but its change follows the concept of predecessors as a whole,and continues to enrich the concept of maternal education according to the development of the times.Among them,the case of Mencius’ mother teaching children has been highly praised by the authorities and the people of all dynasties,and many of the books written by scholars on teaching children contain views on the mother’s religion.The second part expounds the forms,contents and measures of maternal education in the Northern Song Dynasty.Around the female epitaph of the Northern Song Dynasty,the form of the epitaph is divided into independent godson and assistant godson.With regard to the content of mother education,the author,starting from the educational concept advocated by Confucianism,divides it into moral education that focuses on cultivating children’s words and deeds,etiquette,and living habits,and academic education that teaches children to read imperial examinations.The third part discusses the influence of maternal education on children.When children are young,they are closest to their mother.Mother’s words and deeds influence the development of children’s behavior habits and character integrity.Good maternal education helps children’s growth;Bad maternal education hinders the development of children and even backfires.The fourth part analyzes the attitude and evaluation of the Northern Song society towards the maternal religion.From the official and local perspectives,the author argues that a successful example of maternal education is shown as follows: his son glorifies the family because of the imperial examination,his daughter is famous in the countryside because of the honor of women’s morality,his mother receives the award and the canon from the emperor for her meritorious teaching,or the village is proud to emulate the behavior of teaching children.
