| The world today is experiencing profound changes unseen in a century. It is of great value both theoretically and practically to tell stories of the country well and that of the people as well. This report is based on the translation of the Chinese biographical book,The Mottled History: Tracing the Legacy of Ten Great Names from Sanfang Qixiang, which is published by Hebei Education Press in 2021.Authored by JIAN Fuhai, this book selects ten the most important celebrities who came from Sanfang Qixiang in Fuzhou since 1840.With the reputation of “a piece of Sanfang Qixiang, half of modern Chinese history”,this historical site records the past of Fuzhou and witnesses the protection and inheritance of its cultural roots. The translator selects Chapter LU Yin and Chapter LIN Shu to explore their spiritual world and cultural connotations of Fuzhou city by tracing their courses of lifetime in the translation practice.Guided by Sperber,D and Wilson,D’s Relevance Theory, the major translation problems,as well as their corresponding solutions are analyzed in this thesis. The problems include cultural misunderstanding of Chinese four-character words, difficulties in translating classical Chinese and uncertainty about indigestible prose sentences, and the corresponding solutions include changing the way of explicature, keeping inferential clues based on the context and polishing until it achieves formal equivalence according to the cognitive environment of the target readers.By doing this translation, the translator realizes that it is necessary to make full preparation before translation, sharpen the online searching skills, and increase the analytical ability so as to improve the translation ability and efficiency. It is hoped that this report can be helpful for the translation activities concerned. |
