A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Jane Austen:A Family Record (Excerpts) From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

Relevance Theory is a cognitive theory of communication raised by Sperber and Wilson.Wilson's student,Ernst Gutt,took the lead in applying Relevance Theory to translation studies.After intensive research, Gutt provided a general theoretical account for translation under the framework of Relevance Theory.In Relevance Theory,translation is regarded as a communicative activity between the author,the translator and the target readers.Jane Austen:A Family Record is a biography of Jane Austen's family life by the British scholar Deirdre LeFaye,which is recognized as the most authentic and objective official biography of Jane Austen in Britain.In this book,LeFaye describes the life and growth of Jane and her family members,in which the author refers to a large number of characters and works,as well as many cultural contexts.All these deserve serious consideration when translating the work.This thesis studies the translation of the language features of Jane Austen:A Family Record on two levels:lexical and syntactic levels,among which lexical level can be analyzed from part of speech conversion and contextualization.Syntactic level is analyzed from synchronizing,reversing,splitting and integration of the above strategies.At last,the author summarizes lessons and problems to be solved from the translation experience.The translation of cultural context is one of the most difficult points in this translation practice.Apart from constantly improving translating skills,translators should broaden their horizon and further the studying of translation theory.
