| Recently,more and more books aiming at introducing Chinese history and culture to the foreign readers have been translated into English,among which biographical literature introducing famous historical and cultural celebrities in China is one of the most representative genres.Biographies are more likely to arouse the reading interest of the foreign readers.By reading biographies,they can unconsciously have a better understanding of the politics,economy,history,geography,and society of China at that time,which will ultimately result in achieving the purpose of “going global” of Chinese culture.Therefore,it is of great significance to translate such biographies.This thesis is a report on the C-E translation of Chapter BING Xin and Chapter CHEN Yan in The Mottled History authored by JIAN Fuhai and published in 2021 by Hebei Education Press.Guided by Newmark’s semantic and communicative translation theories,the translator has completed this translation practice and selected and analyzed three of the most representative problems encountered in the translation process and the corresponding solutions.For the translation of culture-loaded words,to better transfer the cultural connotation imbued in them,literal translation combined with annotation and free translation are utilized;in terms of the translation of run-on sentences,addition,omission,and reconstruction are adopted for the purpose of improving the readability and acceptability of the target text;with regard to the translation of sentences with rhetorical devices,such methods as literal translation,literal translation combined with annotation,and free translation are applied in the hope of retaining the form as much as possible and meanwhile conveying the meaning of the source text.By doing this translation,the translator has accumulated relevant experience in translating biographical literature and improved her translation ability.It is hoped that this report will be of benefit for other translators involved in such translation activities. |
