Research On The Organization Of University Alumni Association In The Republic Of China(1912-1937)

During the Republic of China,the university alumni association was an important part of higher education.Initiated in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China,university alumni associations were widely established and active in and outside institutions of higher learning during the Republic of China period.These organizations established rules,built clubs,launched journals and carried out activities.Through their own operations,they institutionalized,resourcized and sustained the contacts between their Alma maters and alumni as well as between alumni.It has exerted a profound influence on the construction of the Alma mater,the development of alumni,the public welfare and the history of later generations.Today,with the work of alumni becoming more and more important,it is more enlightening and instructive to conduct a systematic review and in-depth analysis of the development history of this organization.The introduction part mainly explains the reason and value of the topic as well as the purpose,ideas and methods of the research,gives a brief introduction to the main concepts,and summarizes the relevant research on the theme of “alumni association”.The first chapter is the review and analysis of the development and evolution of the university alumni association.By tracing the history of Chinese alumni associations before 1937,we believe that the local alumni associations can be seen in the late Qing Dynasty,and in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China in the form of assembly,teachers and students organizations and graduate organizations in the field of education.In the development history of the Republic of China,the university alumni association has roughly experienced three stages of development:the communication organization for the purpose of connecting emotions,the service organization for the orientation of caring for the Alma mater,and the system organization represented by the “general association-branch”.The second chapter discusses the internal structure and running logic of the university alumni Association during the Republic of China.Through the perspective of social capital theory,the internal logic behind the organization and operation of alumni association in the Republic of China is to realize the cohesion,consolidation and effective development of alumni resources as a form of social capital through the construction,strengthening and utilization of alumni relations network.Through the formation of alumni association and organizational system,the loose alumni relationship network can be institutionalized and standardized.The alumni network has been strengthened and strengthened by gathering information,holding regular meetings,welcoming visitors,launching publications and setting up clubs.Through the operation of the alumni association,the alumni resources contained in the alumni relations network are fully developed in many forms,such as material resources,social influence resources and public welfare resources,and contribute to the construction of the alma mater,alumni development and social undertakings.The third chapter is the study of the main functions of the university alumni association during the Republic of China.This paper analyzes it from four aspects:contact,alumni aid,Alma mater aid and society service,and selects its key elements,such as annual meeting,kinsmen’s association,and employment assistance of alumni aid.It also introduces in detail the economic aid of Alma mater and the contribution of education to social development.The fourth chapter is a case study of Fudan University Alumni Association.In the process of its development,it is difficult to condense the difficulties of alumni members,to raise funds and to promote the practice of work,which together constitute the main obstacles to the construction and development of Fudan University alumni association.In order to cope with the dilemma,the alumni association of Fudan University is constantly improving and perfecting itself,which is manifested in the increasingly complicated organizational structure,the continuous expansion of funding channels,and the improvement of conference work methods.Reflecting on its development dilemma and attempts to solve problems,it can be seen that the attraction to alumni is always insufficient,the lack of lasting and stable funding sources,the excessive use of staff and the lack of alma mater value are the deep-seated reasons for its inability to get rid of the development dilemma.The fifth chapter is a review of the development history of the university alumni association during the Republic of China and a summary of the significance of the current university alumni work.Taking the development history of alumni association in the Republic of China as reference,this paper puts forward some suggestions on improving alumni work in six aspects: grasping the characteristics of alumni resources,reasonably positioning the role and function of alumni association,establishing a mutually beneficial alumnus relationship,enhancing the strategic position of alumni work,improving the ways and methods of alumni work,and giving full play to the public value of alumni resources.
