Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the public health awareness has enhanced and public attention in the fields of bio-medicine and life sciences has increased. The translation of such popular science texts is conducive to the international population and dissemination of the relevant scientific knowledge, which is in line with the needs of the times. The translation material of this report is excerpted from A Brief History Of Human Gene Editing, which contains genetic science knowledge mainly based on biological inheritance and reveals the great course of human understanding the mystery of life.Through the translation practice, the following problems caused by the enormous difference between Chinese and English sentences are found: first,Chinese sentences are loose and short, whereas English sentences are comparatively long;second,Chinese sentences have long and concentrated modifiers, while English modifiers are scattered;third, subject conversion is common in Chinese sentences but rare in English sentences. In response to the above problems, the translation report based on Translation Variation Theory resorts to its seven adaptation strategies of supplement, deletion, edition, summarization, reduction, combination, and remodeling. To be specific, combination and supplement are applied to translate the loose and short sentences, the strategies of edition, reduction and remodeling are used in the translation of the sentences with long modifiers, and summarization and deletion are good adaptations to translate the sentences with subject conversion.Under the guidance of Translation Variation Theory, the translator adopts the appropriate adaptations to accord with the expression habits of English writing and the acceptance habits of English readers, and struggles for the translation of high quality.Underpinned by the analysis and solution of the sentence difficulties in translation, the translator endeavors to convey information accurately in natural and idiomatic English, popularize the scientific knowledge of gene editing effectively, and improve public scientific literacy.Applying Translation Variation Theory to guide the translation practice of popular science texts contributes to spreading the China’s scientific and technological achievements worldwide and improving the international influence of China’s science and technology.
