A Report On Online Interpreting In CIIE 2021 Philippines Business Matching Event

China International Import Expo(CIIE)2021 Philippines Business Matching Event was jointly held by Guangdong Imported Food Association,FOOD2 CHINA,Philippine Trade and Investment Center and other departments from the day of November 2 to November 3,2021.The author was assigned to be one of the consecutive interpreters of this event and her job was to assist the buyers from China and the suppliers from the Philippines in communicating effectively.This report is based on the interpreter’s firsthand knowledge of the event.It uses the interpretation project as the research object,guided by Daniel Gile’s Effort Models to investigate the problems and coping tactics in listening and analyzing,understanding,memory,note-taking,producing and coordinating phases,and evaluate the interpreter’s interpreting performances finally.It was discovered that the interpreter encountered many problems and challenges during this process.First,as the suppliers are from the Philippines,the interpreter struggled with a Southeast Asian accent,which made listening comprehension and analyzing long speeches difficult.Second,since it was a business negotiation event,she also experienced difficulties with figure interpretation,terminology comprehension and expression during the process.Third,the interpreter also found that she was hard to balance interpreting efforts such as memory and note-taking.In addition,the interpreter also encountered suppliers and buyers who were late or had a bad Internet connection,such kind of non-professional problems.Therefore,the interpreter used many interpreting skills in order to solve these problems and complete the task,including anticipating,omitting,generalizing,focusing on brain memory,and balancing each effort.The interpreter hoped that by writing this report,she would be able to fully reflect her own performances,determining the benefits and drawbacks of her interpreting abilities,and providing some references for future interpreters to conduct a better business online interpretation and contribute to the better services of online interpretation.
