This translation practice report comes from the translation project of the Report of the Fifth International Conference on Learning Cities.This report was published in 2022 by UNESCO institute for Lifelong Learning.Besides,the publication focuses on education and lifelong learning,and it provides valuable resource for education researchers,planners,policy-makers and practitioners.The reader for this translation is the leader in government and participates in the policy decision and implementation.According to the reader’s requirements,the translator needs to accurately convey the conference information and ensure that the translation expression conforms to the target language accepted by the reader.In addition,the translator hopes this translation contribute to the construction and development of the learning city at home and abroad.This report belongs to non-literary material and is an informative text.Newmark’s communicative translation theory applies to informative text,emphasizes the information of the source text and its transmission effect.Therefore,the translator chose communicative translation theory to guide this translation practice.In order to ensure the authenticity and accuracy of information transmission and consider the acceptance of translation for the target reader,the translator tried to embody the language characteristics of the source text without lacking the original content and chose the domestication as translation strategy.When translating,the translator divided the translation difficulties into three aspects: the lexical level,the syntactic level and the discourse level.For the lexical level,the source text uses concise words,expresses in a formal style,and involves a large number of professional terms.The terms relate to education,health,covid-19 and etc..The translator used translation skills including diction,amplification and conversion to solve translation difficulties at lexical level.For the syntactic level,the source text contains many long sentences with complicated structure.Based on the context and the language differences between English and Chinese,the translator used translation skills including division and restructuring and voice changes to solve translation difficulties at syntactic level.For the discourse level,the source text has clear structure,formal and logical language expression.The translator should pay attention to the formal degree of translation,the transmission effect of information,and try to maximize the coherence of the translation.In a word,through this practice,the translator has a further understanding of the application of communicative translation theory to informative texts,which not only lays the foundation for future translation work in related fields,but also provides reliable reference materials for translators in related fields.
