Abstract/Summary:
The Language of the Inuit is a monograph describing the Inui geography, language, history, society, and cultural space. It studies the present-day knowledge of the Inuit language from Alaska to Canada and Greenland and mainly discusses the Inuit language. This book is not only an anthropological and linguistic study of language and the broader socio-cultural context, but also a historical witness of the Inuit language users.Based on the practice of translating The Language of the Inuit into Chinese, this thesis mainly studies the third and fourth chapters of it.The Language of the Inuit is the informational text.Based on the translation practice, the author summarizes the translation methods of nouns in Chapter 3 and 4 of the book, and at the same time, this translation practice provides more authoritative reference materials for domestic scholars on Arctic language research. In this translation practice, the author finds that the frequency of noun translation is high, which has a particular research value, and English often uses nouns to reflect its static features. Therefore, the author starts from the translation of nouns or noun phrase in the report. At the same time, under the guidance of Newmark’s communicative translation theory, the author studies the E-C translation of nouns in The Language of the Inuit from the perspective of the target language readers. The research holds that the E-C translation of nouns in linguistic information texts can be summarized into the following five situations: First, when literal translation cannot completely and accurately convey the content of the source text,it adopts the method of semantic amplification;Second, when the target language readers are confused by semantic ambiguity and lack of information, the translation should be carried out by recasting the semantic of nouns;Third, when the translation is jumbled and the secondary information interferes with the primary information, the omission is carried out;Fourthly, when the literal translation lacks elements, the translation method of adding category words is adopted;Fifthly, when the literal translation is obviously blunt, the nouns are converted into other parts of speech such as verbs or adverbs by the conversion method.Through the above methods, the author improves the translation of nouns in this translation practice, making the translation more consistent with the type of linguistic informational text, close to the language habits of the target language readers, and completely and accurately expresses the author’s thoughts of the original text.In addition, under the guidance of communicative translation theory, the deviation of the target language readers’ understanding of the source language information caused by cultural, linguistic, stylistic, and other factors in the reading of translated text is reduced. The research shows that communicative translation theory plays a solid guiding role in the translation of nouns in informational texts, and this report can provide a reference for the translation of nouns or noun phrases in similar texts.
