Chinese Translation Of English Cohesion Devices

This translation practice report is based on the translation of the first four sections of the first chapter of the Economic Outlook issued by the Organization for Economic and Cooperation Development(OECD)in June 2022.From a macroeconomic perspective,the excerpts analyzed the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and COVID-19 on global economies,including growth,inflation,the economic environment,Etc.The source text is a classic social science economic text,rigorous in style,rich in long,complex sentences and specialized terminology,and closely connected with semantic logic.To better summarize this practice,to improve the author’s translation ability in this kind of text,to enrich the translation research of social science and economic text,and to add to the research of cohesion devices and translation under the perspective of the cohesion theories of systemic functional linguistics,the author has attempted to analyze the differences of four cohesion devices of reference,substitution,ellipsis,and conjunction in Chinese and English,then to explore the corresponding specific translation techniques.It is found that,in this practice,based on the main differences between Chinese and English languages: hypotactic and paratactic,and taking into account the actual context,the English-Chinese translation techniques of the cohesion devices in social science economic texts are divided into the following seven types respectively according to the frequency of use: omission,repetition,adjustment of wording,adjustment of language order,the concretization of pronouns,the addition of words,and following the conjunction devices in the original text.
