Pierre Reverdy is a French modern poet and theorist of the twentieth century.Known for his poetic creation and theory,he is adept at integrating painting, cinematography and other artistic techniques into his poetry, expressing his deepest emotions through a unique representation of the world of objects.Reverdy’s poems, often short, concise and of a special form, are known for their mystery and obscurity. But if we step into the images painted by him,it is inescapable to feel the stimulation and mobilization of the senses in the verses. Therefore, the description of the senses is not only a distinctive feature of poetry, but also a shortcut for readers to penetrate his obscure verses and mysterious heart. This dissertation, focusing on sense, takes as its object of study Reverdy’s collection of poems Plupart du temps written between 1915 and 1922,and attempts to analyze it on the following levels.Firstly,by tracing the philosophical reflections, the context of the time, and the poet’s personal experience,we try to give explanations on the sources of his sensitivity.Secondly,we probe into the text of the poem.As for poetry text analysis,a textual and thematic method is adopted to obtain further in-depth information on the presentation of the sensory world which is mainly visual and complemented by the senses of hearing, touch, smell and taste. We try to understand the particular mood and melancholic connotation conveyed by his poetry. Finally, starting from sense, this dissertation focuses on the two worlds linked by sensory experience: the objective world presented by the senses and the world of the sensory subject. With a respective analysis of the characteristics of “reality” of the objective world and the dual position of the sensory subject,we deepen our study of Reverdy’s poetic creation and finally unveil his mystery of the sensory world.
