A Report On E-C Translation Of Metaphor In The Associated Press News

Metaphor is pervasive in news discourse and it plays a great role in enhancing the power of news language and making news discourse more interesting and vivid.In the process of translation,due to the linguistic and cultural differences between English and Chinese,the metaphor translation in news brings great challenges to the translator.In this report,18 pieces of news from the official website of the Associated Press are selected as the translation texts.Based on the equivalence of metaphorical images in the source and target language,metaphors in the selected texts are classified into three types:(1)metaphors with the same images in two languages;(2)metaphors with different images in two languages;(3)metaphors with the void image in the target language.Under the guidance of the eco-translatology theory,this report aims to explore the metaphor translation strategies.Firstly,as for metaphors with the same images in two languages,two translation strategies can be applied:(1)If the image of the source language fully overlaps with that of the target language,it is suggested to reproduce the same image in TL,which can keep the original style of the source text;(2)if the connotative meaning of the image is relatively inconspicuous in the target language,it is preferable to reproduce the same image with annotations which can achieve clarity and avoid obscurity.Secondly,as for the metaphors with the different images in two languages,replacing the image with a standard image in TL strategy can be applied to save the readability and enhance the language appeal.Thirdly,given the metaphors with the void image and no counterpart in the target language,it is suggested to rephrase the connotation of the image to keep the informativeness of the source text.This translation practice is conducive to solving the difficulties in metaphor translation in news and it is expected to draw some valuable experience in metaphor translation in news.
