The source text for this translation practice is selected from the body part of the essay Register Variation on the Searchable Web: A Multi-Dimensional Analysis.This source text uses multidimensional analysis to explore the register variation of the searchable web in different dimensions.It provides full details of the procedure,like the introduction to the creation of corpora,the classification of register categories and the identification of the sets of linguistic features that frequently co-occur in texts.In recent years,this corpus-based quantitative linguistic analysis has been increasingly applied in discourse analysis and translation research.In response to this trend in linguistic research,the latest research methods are introduced to domestic readers,with the aim of providing corresponding references.The source text of this translation practice is characterized by its high professionalism,concise language,clear logic,and abstract concepts,which place high demands on the translator.Based on the characteristics of the source text and the difficulties encountered in translation,this paper takes functional equivalence theory as the theoretical framework and conducts case studies to analyze and summarize corresponding translation practice experiences from the following three levels: vocabulary,syntax,and discourse.At the vocabulary level,techniques such as word addition and deletion and part-of-speech conversion can be used.For the terminologies in the text,it is necessary to consult multiple sources for verification before translation.At the syntax level,techniques such as word order adjustment,dividing long sentences,and changing passive voice to active voice can be used.At the discourse level,cohesive devices such as substitution and reference can be used to achieve coherence in the text.The aim of this research,on the basis of the mentioned translation techniques,is to achieve the communicational purpose of academic texts,improve the quality of translations,and provide guidance for the translation of academic texts. |
