Academic texts are of high professionalism, practicality and academic value, whose translation is of great significance to publicize academic ideas, promote cultural exchanges and encourage innovation. However, due to the high professionalism of academic texts, the translation of academic texts remains a huge challenge for many non-professionals,so there are only a few researches on the translation of academic texts in China. This translation material is excerpted from the seventh, eighth and ninth chapters of the linguistics academic work of politeness The Pragmatics of Politeness written by the British linguist Geoffrey Leech,it has a high academic value with precise words, concise writing, accurate expression and strict logic. In lexical level,a large amount of linguistic terms and nominalizations are used in this thesis,;in syntax level, passive voice is used to make objective statements, and long sentences are used to express complex concepts.Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory, this thesis analyzes the key and difficult points of academic text translation at the level of lexical and syntax,so as to summarize the techniques of academic text translation under functional equivalence theory. At lexical level, techniques of literal translation and free translation are used in the translation of terminology;conversion and amplification are used in the translation of nominalization. At syntax level, the translator adopts translation techniques such as translating passive sentences into active sentences and sentences with no subject;restructuring and splitting are used in the translation of long sentence.Through the above methods, the functional equivalence between the original text and the translation is better realized.
