Collocation,as a major part of a language,plays an important role in language learning.The most obvious reason for its importance is that the way words combine in collocations which are fundamental to all language use.Collocation is an important part of native speakers’ language competence,and their inclusion in foreign and second language teaching is widely acknowledged today.A good command of collocation,apart from increasing the mental lexicon,leads to an increase in fluency.Collocation is also part of communicative competence.However,with such significance,it has not gained enough attention in English teaching in China.Middle school teachers are no longer focused on collocation;therefore,this becomes one of the causes of students’ collocational errors.What’s more,learners tend to memorize a word by means of equivalence in their mother tongue.They consider vocabulary as a unit of individual words,and neglect their connection with the words co-occurring with them.We can draw the conclusion that both teachers’ teaching methods and students’ learning strategy are problematic.It is urgent to have a general understanding of status quo of Chinese English learners’ use of collocations,and causes for their collocational errors.Based on the theory of error analysis and the theory of interlanguage contrastive analysis,this study collects data by questionnaire survey to study six delexical verbs(do,get,give,have,make,take)and their collocations.The research questions run as follows:(1)What kind of collocational errors of delexical verbs made by high school students since filling in the blank?(2)What are the reasons for high school students having collocational errors when filling in the blank?(3)How to reduce the collocational errors of high school students when filling in the blank? According to the analysis,it can be seen that high school students are influenced by such factors as L1 transfer,overgeneralization,induced errors,and teacher-induced errors.This study has the following suggestions for high school students to learn delexical verb collocation.Compare the target language with the mother tongue,and summarize the differences between the two,teacher can make full use of corpus resources and the influence of L1 positive transfer.Teacher should improve the ability when teaching in daily life and pay more attention to the teaching of language form and deepen the teaching of vocabulary knowledge.Students should also need to transform the way of learning and consciously use strategies,in order to improve the ability of high school students to use the delexical verbs and its collocations.
