Lexis has become a renewed focus in second language acquisition over the past few decades.Collocation,as a major part of lexis, appeals to many scholars.Delexical verb is also an indispensable part of lexical collocation.Based on the theoretical framework of the Contrastive Interlanguage Analysis and corpus approach, the aim of the present paper is to explore whether there are differences in the use of delexical verbs in the ETS TOEFL English writing corpus by English learners with different native language backgrounds and different grades of segments. In this study, the author chooses four high-frequency delexical verbs—MAKE,TAKE,GIVE,HAVE as objects of study, and selects the ETS writing corpus to look into. The author explores the following questions:(1)Is there any difference in the use of delexical verbs by English learners in different grades segments? What are the differences?(2)Is there any difference between English learners from China and Germany in using delexical verbs? What are the differences?(3)Is there any difference in the use of delexical verbs by English learners of different grades from different countries? The main findings are as follows:English learners in different grade segments have differences in the use of delexical verbs, and the overall difference of size effect is large. The uses of delexical verbs reaches the maximum in the middle segment, whereas the high segment and low segment in the Chinese group has no significant difference. With the improvement of learners’ level, the learners’ uses of delexical verbs shows a declining trend.Learners with different language backgrounds in China and Germany also have significant differences in the use of delexical verbs, but the size effect of difference is minor.Under the interaction of English learners with different grade segments in different countries, there are significant differences in the use of delexical verbs, and the size effect is large.
