| This thesis attempts to analyze English delexical verbs from thetheoretical perspective of decategorization with a view to exploring theirnature and characteristics.Based on the theory of decategorization, this thesis tries to discussEnglish delexical verbs by means of qualitative analysis, which is chieflyused to collect data of English delexical verbs and conduct the research ondelexical verbs accompanied with eventive nouns under discussion. Tocharacterize English delexical verbs, the present study utilizes prototypetheory to show the similarities and differences between delexical verbs andprototype categories. On the basis of that, decategorization theory isintroduced to analyze, on the one hand, a kind of progressive relation rootedbetween prototype theory and decategorization theory? on the other hand therelations between delexical verbs and transitive constructions in accompanyof situation framing and category transfer in such a transitive process.This research is a significant attempt in the study of English delexicalverbs from the perspective of decategorization theory. It offers a newtheoretical approach to the analysis of English delexical verbs. This researchgives expression to the significance of delexical verbs and their features.and casts some light on the pedagogical implications of them. |
