As China’s national power has grown,so has its cultural soft power.More and more foreign people have shown interest in Chinese culture.Against the international background of deepening globalization,it has become our direction to insist on cultural independence and self-confidence,and we must tell China’s stories well.On 3rd October 2022,the author was honored to be invited to provide an online interpreting service for a Canadian friend. And this service was about Figure Paintings from across the Ages in the Palace Museum Collection. This friend studied costume design at university and was very interested in Chinese classical cultural elements. She heard that this exhibition could be visited online, but she could not understand what the Chinese commentary was saying without an English interpretation,so she invited the author to interpret this online exhibition for her. Before the interpreting practice, the author read books, researched related materials, prepared a glossary of words that may appear in the interpreting process in order to guarantee the quality of the interpretation. After the interpretation, the author tried to find out the problems of the interpretation and look for the appropriate solutions to these problems. The author found out that the two biggest problems in interpretation were information loss and lack of logic in interpretation output.Based on the Functional Equivalence Theory, the author chose literal translation and free translation, reorganization and conversion respectively to solve the two problems above.Through this interpreting report, the author has gained a deeper understanding of guide interpreting, found her own problems in the whole process and reoriented herself to her future interpreting study. In addition,it is hoped that this practice report can provide a reference for similar interpreting practices and that its analysis and research made of the above two problems and coping strategies proposed can be of help to other MTI students and interpreters.
