| Since its introduction to China, the film industry has undergone more than 120 years of development. In the turbulent history of 20th-century Chinese society,Chinese cinema has experienced difficulties and obstacles, growing from scratch and from small to large. It has achieved remarkable accomplishments in various aspects such as film theory, literature creation, production, management, distribution, and exhibition. At the same time, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, the film industry gradually developed in a challenging environment.During the resistance against Japan, the Communist Party of China’s film industry relied mainly on the "Yan’an Film Unit" as a specialized film organization. As an important part of Chinese film history, the Yan’an Film Unit was officially established in Yan’an in September 1938.Its full name was "The Film Unit of the Political Department of the Eighth Route Army Headquarters." It was the first film organization under the unified leadership of the Communist Party of China. The organization differed from the film companies in the Nationalist-controlled areas, which primarily focused on profit, while the Yan’an Film Unit served mainly the anti-Japanese resistance.Due to the tense wartime situation and limited resources, the film production during that period was mostly limited to documentaries and news footage, which directly influenced the assessment of the value of films produced during the Yan’an era.In fact, the work of the Yan’an Film Unit during the resistance against Japan has significant research value. This paper focuses on the Yan’an Film Unit as a research subject and uses various historical research methods. It starts by exploring the background and purpose of the establishment of the film unit.It analyzes the guiding policies followed by the Yan’an Film Unit’s photography and exhibition teams,as well as their management system and operational mechanisms during their work. The paper systematically analyzes and summarizes the characteristics, work experience, and contributions of this film organization. The first part is the introduction, which explains the rationale, significance, research status, methodology, and limitations of the study. The second part traces the historical background of the establishment of the Yan’an Film Unit.It analyzes the achievements and obstacles faced by the party in the film industry before the establishment of the film unit, further clarifying the purpose and conditions for the establishment of the Yan’an Film Unit. The third part focuses on the Yan’an Literary and Art Symposium as an important time point, analyzing the similarities and differences in ideological guidance before and after the symposium. The fourth part discusses the management system, operational mechanisms, and major achievements of the Yan’an Film Unit. The management system is examined from the perspectives of organizational management and regulatory management. The operational mechanisms of the photography and exhibition teams are analyzed separately. The major achievements are discussed in terms of the accomplishments of the photography team and the exhibition team. The fifth part summarizes the historical achievements, work experience, and significance of the Yan’an Film Unit.It first analyzes the historical role played by the Yan’an Film Unit in promoting anti-Japanese policies, inspiring the enthusiasm for resistance, and shaping the national spirit. It then explores the work experience of the Yan’an Film Unit from the perspectives of party leadership, innovation and practice, and international exchange and learning, affirming its contemporary value in promoting revolutionary and contemporary spirits and advancing the development of the Chinese film industry. |
