The Relationship Between Undergraduate Students’ Perceived Helicopter Parenting And Filial Responsibility

Helicopter parenting is the extreme concern of parents for the development and well-being of their children,high degree of involvement and support in children’s lives and control children’s behavior as a way to avoid frustration and failure and to make decisions on children’s behalf.Perceived helicopter parenting refers to children’s subjective feelings,perceptions and judgments about their parents’ approach to helicopter parenting.Filial responsibility refers to the children’s obligation to respect,care for and look after their parents.Most previous studies have explored helicopter parenting and filial responsibilities in isolation and have not directly examined the correlation between the two.but it is easy to see that there are some cross variables between them.So,is there some effect of helicopter parenting on filial responsibility? It becomes an important issue to be solved.Therefore,designs three studies to directly examine the impact of helicopter parenting on the filial responsibility.Study 1 completed the revision of the Consolidated Helicopter Parenting Scale(CHPS)by administering the scale to 588 college students.The revised Helicopter Parenting Scale has eight items and a 5-point internal consistency coefficient of0.878.The content validity and structural validity indicators met psychometric standards.Study 2 examined the relationship between perceived helicopter parenting by undergraduate students and filial responsibility by longitudinally tracking 237 college students.The results showed a significant negative predictive effect of T1 perceived helicopter parenting on T2 filial responsibility(=-0.396,p<0.001)and no predictive effect of T1 filial responsibility on T2 perceived helicopter parenting.Study 3 explored the relationship between self-control and social support in relati on to perceived helicopter parenting and filial responsibility through an empirical surve y of 430 university students.The results of the study showed total effect of-0.300(L LCI=-0.608,ULCL=-0.326),direct effect of-0.155(LLCI=-0.367,ULCL=-0.116)and to tal indirect effect of-0.145(LLCI=-0.201,ULCL=-0.086).perceived helicopter parentin g-self-control-filial responsibility,perceived helicopter parenting-self-control-social suppo rt-filial responsibility both mediation paths were significant.Conclusion: Self-control an d social support play a chain mediating role in the relationship between perceived heli copter parenting and filial responsibility.In summary,Helicopter Parenting Questionnaire has good reliability and can be used as a formal scale for more in-depth research.Helicopter parenting by undergraduate students has a negative predictive effect on filial responsibility and self-control and social support mediate the chain between helicopter parenting by undergraduate students and filial responsibility.
