Zhou Sicong was at an important period in the development of ink and wash in the 20th century,and is one of the representative painters of contemporary Chinese ink and wash figure painting,during which her artistic style was constantly changing with the times.Zhou Sicong’s works have a distinctive style that combines traditio nal Chinese ink and wash with Western realism,closely in tune with the times but i ndependent of them.Throughout her thirty-year career in ink and wash,she has mastered the black,whit e and grey of the picture to the utmost with her traditional ink and brush language a nd solid modelling skills.Zhou Sicong’s works have a precise and ingenious grasp of the relationship between black and white and grey,and it is the perfect use of bla ck and white and grey tones and different subjects that creates excellent works in a wide variety of styles,such as mellow and solemn,delicate and languid,elegant an d condensed,etc.The images convey a wealth of emotions to the fullest extent and become a bridge between the viewer and the painter.This article begins with an introduction to the effects of black,white and grey on th e image and the different visual perceptions it brings to the viewer,through three se parate aspects: black tones,white tones and grey tones.The second is to use Zhou Sicong’s work to explore the visual power of different tones,reflecting the different effects of black and white and grey blending with each other to produce different i mages.Once again,we analyse the subject matter and language of the paintings fro m Zhou Sicong’s works,and feel the richness of emotions such as power,naturalne ss and musicality conveyed in them.Lastly,the influence of black,white and grey on personal creativity is shown in the work,which not only demonstrates prior the oretical learning,but also actively applies theoretical knowledge in practice,which is reflected in the creative work.To sum up,through the analysis of Zhou Sicong’s works,we can feel the charm brought by black and white and grey,and continuous ly improve our artistic and aesthetic qualities.
