As a famous calligrapher in the Qing Dynasty,Zhang Yuzhao’s calligraphy originated from the study of calligraphy,and then started from Tang steles and traced back to the Northern Dynasty steles,showing a trend of catching up with the Qin and Han dynasties,his style of calligraphy is famous for its simplicity,massiness and strength,which had an important impact on the development of calligraphy art in the late Qing Dynasty.By sorting out the evaluation of Zhang Yuzhao’s calligraphy since the late Qing Dynasty,the author finds that the evaluation of Zhang Yuzhao’s calligraphy has shown a decreasing trend in the calligraphy industry.In the context of the controversy over stele inscriptions,this article vertically takes the changes in the understanding of stele studies as a clue,and combines the shortcomings of Zhang Yuzhao’s own writing and the representation of Zhang Yuzhao’s learning from later generations,on the basis of further textual research on the reasons for the change of his calligraphy status,puts forward a new understanding of Zhang Yu’s calligraphy status.It tries to rethink its position in the history of calligraphy on a more objective basis,and thus explores the enlightenment significance and value of Zhang Yuzhao’s calligraphy art to contemporary calligraphy creation.
