Zhang Yuzhao(1823-1894),a famous scholar,writer,calligrapher and educator in the Qing Dynasty.Honored as the head of the “Four Scholars in Zeng Guofan's Governor Office”,Zhang was well-versed in learning and a representative of the inscription study movement.Learning from the inscriptions of the North Dynasty and being innovative at the same time,he eventually developed a unique style of calligraphy.The “Good King Stele” is among the largest existing calligraphic inscriptions in China.As Zhang Yuzhao has long devoted himself to the calligraphy of the inscriptions,this article aims to better guide the imitation of the “Good King Stele” by studying the characteristics of Zhang Yuzhao's calligraphy.This article is divided into three parts:The first part summarizes Zhang Yuzhao's life and learning,as well as his individual study and calligraphic features formed in the background of the times.The calligraphic characteristics of Zhang are also expounded in terms of structure,pen and composition art.The second part discusses how to better understand the development and evolution of calligraphy,fonts and Chinese characters by studying the artistic features of the “Good King Stele”,which is one of the largest existing calligraphy inscriptions in China.Based on the discussion of Zhang Yuzhao's method of creating inscription calligraphy,the third part analyzes the running script in terms of its structure,pen,composition art and chirography features,so as to better guide calligraphic creation.
