| Since its invention,photography has had the unique advantage of being able to reproduce reality and record the objective world as opposed to other artistic disciplines.As the art of photography has evolved,so have the forms of images produced,and the art of creating ’images’ has become more than just photography.Photography,film,television and the new media visual styles brought about by digital,digital and internet technologies all fall under the umbrella of image art.From its inception,photography has been influenced by painting.At the turn of the last century,when photography was introduced to China,the status of Western pictorial photography was fading,and the fusion of photography with the aesthetics of traditional Chinese painting established the Chinese ’pictorial photography’ style,which became the mainstream of Chinese photography.Chinese photography also developed its own pictorial aesthetic under the influence of the traditional Chinese painting aesthetic of ’vividness’.In Chinese pictorial photography,the grasp of reality and the white space in the image are all drawn from traditional Chinese painting.For photography,time is not a means of creation,but a creative element.With the broadening of the semantics of photography and the enrichment of photographic creation methods,photographers use time as an object of expression to give their works a certain concept,thus the value and meaning of photographic works are reflected,and time has its own aesthetic meaning.In the process of exploring the aesthetics of time,photography can not only freeze those moments,but also compress,reorganise,juxtapose and even give fluidity to time,which expands the dimension of people’s perception of time.In addition,time in photography can also play a marvellous role with space,feeling the roaming of time in the spatial field of vision and creating a space of imagination.This is in line with the proposition of ’void space’ in traditional Chinese aesthetics.As a traditional Chinese painting technique,white space is used to create a poetic imagination through composition,layout and the arrangement of brushwork and ink.The limited words in a simple picture tell a story in an infinite space and time,creating room for the viewer’s imagination.By combining the traditional aesthetic proposition of white space with the concept of time in image art,one finds a new way of embodying and interpreting the aesthetic meaning of time.This thesis is an exploration of the different creative approaches to time in the development of image art,combined with the works created by artists.The research is divided into three main parts.Firstly,the three concepts of "video art","time" and "void space" are explained and defined in the research.Secondly,the concept of image time,which is the subject of this study,became an aesthetic concept in later artistic expression because of the advances in cameras and light sensitive materials,which made photography an artistic medium for artists to express their ideas.In the second chapter of this essay,the process by which this technology became art is explained.Finally,the third section,the main part of the essay,divides video art into modern and contemporary images.Modern and contemporary images display different creative styles and subjective expressions in the representation of the temporality of the image.The aesthetic concept of time is also always changing.By combining the study of the aesthetics of time with the aesthetics of void space,more possibilities for the semantics of photographic time are enriched. |
