A Brief Analysis Of The Application Of The Concept Of Time And Space In Photography

Traditionally,photography, being differ from music or literature, was classified as a space art other than temporal art. As time went on, the concept of space was infiltrating into the expression of photography. Meanwhile, since the 20 th century, conceptual arts such as imaging art and installation art, were gradually replacing traditional art forms such as painting and sculpture as the main stream. This article summarized the cases of the application of the concept of space, and discussed it from various aspects. Conceptual art had abundant expression forms. With the join of temporal art such as imaging art, it cannot be properly classified in either temporal or space art. In order to do the research in depth, and present it clearly, this article compared the expressions and applications of time and space in various art classes.The first part of this article started with the questioning of the theory “the issue of time cannot be solved in space art.” This part emphasized on comparing two methods of art classification. It pointed out the illogicality of the classification that divided arts between temporal art and space art, and the importance of the concept of time and space in contemporary photography. The second part enumerated the ways to express time and space in imaging arts other than photography, and the accomplishments in these area. The third part of this article analyzed the theoretical supports of the concept of time and space in artistic expression, and the author’s practices based on these theories.All these analyses and researches leads to a conclusion: as the concept of time and space taking a more and more important place in contemporary imaging art, it is safe to say that the exploration and practice of the application of this concept in photography will make more significant progress.
