The translation practice report is based on the E-C translation of Plastic Soup:An Atlas of Ocean Pollution, the popular science text, which is written by Michiel Roscam Abbing. The book consists of two parts and the first part addresses the courses of plastic soup, whereas the second part, which is selected as the source text of the translation task,is about the inspiring initiatives to remove plastic soup from the map.As a popular science text, whose language is more pragmatic and objective, the source text is abundant in short sentences with various cohesive devices to achieve the coherence within the text.Hence,to meet the needs of target readers, that are teenagers, the translator needs to pay more attention to the differences between English and Chinese cohesive devices, and adopts appropriate translation methods to convey the original author’s intention.Consequently,on the basis of the Skopos theory, the translation of grammatical cohesion is chosen as the research object.Halliday and Hasan classified the cohesive devices into lexical cohesion and grammatical cohesion including the reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction. This report mainly embodies three types: reference, substitution and conjunction. In the process of translation research, under the guidance of Skopos theory, this report sums up four translation methods(contextualization, repetition, addition and omission)through the analysis of grammatical cohesion in the example sentences,to improve the coherence of the translation,in order to provide reference for the translation of grammatical cohesion in similar texts.
