This report is based on the E-C translation of Emily St.John Mandel’s novel Sea of Tranquility published in 2022.The excerpts mainly involve time travel and the plague.Chapters 3-10 of the third part of the novel are selected for analysis and research. After analyzing the characteristics of the excerpts, the author believes that the translation of dialogue is a major difficulty in the translation of literary texts. There are two major difficulties in dialogue translation in this paper, namely, reflecting the personality and emotion of the characters and making dialogue translation conform to the convention of dialogue.Under the guidance of Robert Jauss and Wolfgang Iser’s reception aesthetics theory, the author discusses the techniques of dialogue translation.Reception aesthetics theory focuses on the readers’ feelings when reading the text, taking the readers’ preexisting experience, cultural knowledge and other contents into consideration, which enables the readers to fully understand the content expressed in the original text and helps them better grasp the content of the text. This report analyzes the translation of dialogues with examples from the perspective of reception aesthetics theory, applying three translation methods including adaption, addition and division. All of these methods ensure that the translation is vivid and readable. It is hoped that the findings of the report could bring some help to those who are interested in dialogue translation.
