Novel is a literary genre centered on the portrayal of characters.Character dialogue is one of the essential elements in novel works,which plays an important role in shaping characters,advancing plot development and attracting readers?interests in reading.People We Met on Vacation,a new book written by an American writer Emily Henry,contains a large number of vivid and interesting dialogues reflecting characters? personalities.Guided by Functional Equivalence Theory,the translator flexibly adopted translation methods and skills to complete it successfully.The translation practice takes chapter 6 to 9 of People We Met on Vacation as the research object.Through the analysis of translation cases from the perspectives of addition,variation and division,the report explores how the functional equivalence theory guides dialogue translation and provides some practical cases and reference for the translation of the similar works.This report consists of four chapters.Chapter one generally introduces the background of the task and the source text.Chapter two describes the task process,illustrating pre-translation preparation,translation process and post-translation revision.Chapter three is the main part of the report,case analysis.It covers the introduction of the functional equivalence theory and its principles,difficulties in dialogue translation and methods that have been taken.Chapter four concludes with major findings,limitations and suggestions for future studies.
