| English Curriculum Criteria revised in 2020 proposed that cultural awareness reflects the value of the core competencies of English.As an important carrier of ideas and culture,English not only has the role of absorbing human civilization and drawing on advanced science and technology of foreign countries,but also has the role of understanding other cultures,disseminating Chinese culture,and strengthening mutual understanding among cultures.Reading is a complex cognitive activity that is an important part of linguistic and psychological research.It is important to improve English reading achievements by combining cultural awareness,a core competency,with the teaching of English reading classes.Based on Ausubel’s theory of meaningful learning and Vygotsky’s cultural-historical theory,this study used the methods like literature research,questionnaire survey,classroom observation,interviews and experimentation to explore the following questions:(1)What is the current situation of the cultural awareness cultivation(CAC)in high school English reading classes?What are the influencing factors?(2)How are classroom activities designed to better integrate reading courses and students’ cultural awareness cultivation?(3)What is the correlation between the cultural awareness cultivation and high school students’ English reading achievements?In this study,110 first-year students of a high school in Anshan City,Liaoning Province were selected as the questionnaire survey participants.The author observed classroom teaching,interviewed 6 students and 3 teachers,and conducted a 17-week teaching experiment on 85 students in 2 teaching classes.In the experiment,the same teacher and the same teaching materials were used.Through two tests,the experimental results were compared and analyzed by SPSS21.0software and concluded conclusions.By analyzing the data collected by the research methods,the following conclusions are drawn:(1)Currently,the cultural awareness cultivation in English reading classes in high school is not significant.The influencing factors include: the orientation of teaching strategies under examination-oriented education,teachers’ lack of cultivating students’ cultural awareness,and the lack of cultural awareness cultivation activities in teaching design etc.(2)By means of the effective integration of reading courses,classroom activities that purposefully incorporate cultural elements can effectively cultivate students’ cultural awareness.(3)The cultural awareness cultivation was positively related to the English reading achievements of high school students’.The cultural awareness cultivation could improve the English reading comprehension achievements of students’.In the teaching of reading,continuous cultivation of students’ cultural awareness and completion of related cultivation activities motivated students’ enthusiasm and made students interested in the cultural elements behind the language,so that the core competencies of English subject were improved,which in turn promoted the improvement of language knowledge and learning ability,thus significantly improving reading achievement. |
