The English key competences were put forward in the English Curriculum Standards for senior high schools(2017 Edition).The new curriculum standard aims to develop quality education and cultivate students’ comprehensive abilities.The aim of the new curriculum standard is to develop quality education and pay attention to cultivate students’ comprehensive abilities.The English key competences mainly include language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability.And the educational value of English is reflected by the English key competences.With the development of English teaching reform,English reading teaching in high school should not only focus on the cultivation of students’ language ability and learning ability,but also strengthen the cultivation of the cultural awareness.English teaching materials in senior high schools contain the plenty knowledge of English culture,and exercises also involve in cultural knowledge,and even the CNP version of senior high school English teaching material contains a “cultural corner” section;In English class,teachers introduce and supplement English cultural knowledge through diversified cultural teaching methods,and at the same time teachers create real situations for students to experience diverse cultures.Therefore,cultivating students’ cultural awareness has become one of the important goals in English teaching.Based on the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis and intercultural communication theory,the306 students and 30 English teachers from three senior high schools in Yan’an city are regarded as the research object,and questionnaire survey,classroom observation and interview are used to probe: What is the current situation of the cultural awareness in English reading teaching in high schools in Yan’an city? What are the factors that affect the cultivation of cultural awareness in English reading teaching in senior high schools in Yan’an city? According to the current situation and influencing factors of cultural awareness cultivation in English reading teaching in high schools in Yan’an city,which suggestions should be put forward? Through the analysis and discussion of questionnaires,classroom observation and interview results,it is found that: Teachers do not make enough efforts to cultivate cultural awareness in teaching,which is mainly reflected in the lack of diversity in the form of cultural teaching organization and the emphasis on language knowledge;The lack of cultural knowledge and thinking about the cultural differences between Western culture and Chinese culture lead to students’ weak intercultural communication ability.The influencing factors include teachers’ literacy,students’ cultural learning beliefs and schools’ cultural teaching environment.Finally according to the reasons,suggestions are put forward: Teachers are expected to promote their literacy and make more efforts to cultivate cultural awareness;Students are expected to set up correct learning motivation,improve the ability of intercultural communication and strengthen self-confidence of culture.Schools are expected to improve the cultural teaching conditions and enrich the cultural learning resources.
