| In the 13 th century,The Mongol Empire’s conquests,and this facilitated cross-cultural exchanges between countries,with exchanges between Central Asia and Europe becoming exceptionally frequent.However,as the Yuan dynasty declined in power,this cross-cultural exchange began to decline sharply.By the time the 17 th century saw the vigorous development of European navigation,missionaries,travellers,merchants and missions began to set foot in the mysterious world of the East.in the 19 th century,with the flourishing of Western capitalism,the East began to turn from strength to strength and Western records of nomadic peoples began to diminish.Although the eastern travellers had different identities and different aims,they all paid strong attention to the nomads of the East,the Tartars.This article examines the ’Tatar narrative’ of the Europeans during the Enlightenment.It is divided into four parts: the first part examines the evolution of the Western concept of ’Tartar’ and thus identifies the influence of nomads in European literature;the second part portrays the image of ’Tartar’ in European travelogues,by examining The second part depicts the image of the ’Tartar’ in European travelogues,examining the evolution of the image of the nomad in European travelogues,describing the image of the ’other’ in travelogues and the evolution of this image,and analysing the reasons for the evolution of the image of the ’Tartar’.The third section examines the fictional view of the Tartars in the historical writings of the missionaries,looking at the interweaving of fictional and real historical facts they recorded and the influence of the missionary texts on other European literature.The fourth section looks at ’Tartar’ writing in European drama,analysing Western misinterpretations of Eastern material and aesthetic choices through nomadic writing in Western drama.The paper examines the evolution of the ’Tartar narrative’ in European writings during the Enlightenment,the impact of the ’Tartar’ image as a cultural vehicle on European society and ideology at the time,and the influence of Eastern minority culture on European literature.It also focuses on the influence of Eastern minority cultures on European literature,and provides material for the study of cultural exchange between China and foreign countries. |
