The late Ming and early Qing Dynasty is one of the very important periods of the development of Catholicism in China.It not only set off a wave of transmission in China,but also had a great influence on the development of Chinese culture at that time or later.The Chinese and Western cultures have built a bridge of communication through religion and opened up a large scale of contact between the two civilizations.In the process of conflict and integration between the two different cultures,the Western Jesuit scholars and the Chinese scholars became the leading force for the cultural exchange.Qu Shisi(1590—1650)was a famous anti-Qing general in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty.He had played an irreplaceable role of backbone in the political and military affairs of Nan-Ming Yong Li Dynasty.During the regime of the history of the Ming and Qing Dynasties,he was an extremely important figure.Because of the research on Qu Shisi as a scholar in the late Ming dynasty have always been concentrated in aspects of politics,history,military,literature and so on.And there is less concern about his Catholic faith and his religious thought.On the basis of former studies and in combine with relevant historical materials,this essay chose Qu Shisi as the research object of the case study and focused on his religious beliefs,mainly verified about his Catholic faith.This essay examine his family background,the context of friendship and the world of faith in detail under the social zeitgeist by seeking information from the Anthology of Qu Shisi,the Chronicle of Qu Shisi and other academic works.In order to further inspect the cultural soil he living in,identify his thoughts and beliefs and explore his inner world of faith,explore the Catholic ideas contained in his writings and the influence of Catholic faith on his life.This article is mainly divided into four chapters:The first chapter is introduction.It mainly introduces the domestic and international research status and the purposes of this research and significance.It also briefly introduces Qu Shisi's lifetime and expounds the methods,ideas and innovations of this research.The second chapter mainly examines the identity of Catholic of Qu Shisi and elaborates on three influential factors of his Catholic faith,such as Qu Shisi's family,the turbulent environment of the late Ming Dynasty and his companionship all had a certain impact on his Catholic faith.There are many different opinions and a lot of confusion about whether Qu Shisi was a Catholic in academia.The author tries tostudy the time,causes and obstacles of Qu Shisi's attending Catholic,the harmony between Catholic faith and the Confucian tradition and the influence on all aspects of his life according to his own beliefs.The third chapter mainly discusses the Catholic thought contained in Qu Shisi's poems.It will focus on researching the Anthology of Qu Shisi,Qu Shisi's poems and other works are included in it.By analyzing his works to analyze the Catholic thought contained in his literary works and do deep insight into the belief choice of the clipper seam between the Confucianism and the Catholicism and in order to reveal that during the state unrest and the process of the collision of Chinese and Western culture,Qu Shisi as a Chinese scholar was inclined to accept what kind of Confucian knowledge and those traditional cultures endowed him what kind of character,how did he adhere to Catholic faith,accomplish the long process of religious internalization and externalization and how to deal with the conflict between the Confucianism and the Catholicism.The fourth chapter mainly discusses Qu Shisi's role in Chinese and western cultural exchanges.We can find out that Qu Shisi played an important role in the transmission of Western knowledge in the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty through studying the communication between Qu Shisi and the missionaries.The aim is to see the important role that Catholics in the late Ming Dynasty and the early Qing Dynasty played in spreading Western culture and he had promoted cultural exchanges between China and the West at the same time.
