The octatonic theory has received widespread attention in music theory since Arthur Berger applied it to Stravinsky’s work in 1963,and then through the research of Pieter C.Van den Toorn,Richard Cohn,Steven Ball,Allen Forte,Richard Taruskin,Cheong Wai-Ling and other theorists, the theory has gradually expanded to the works of Liszt,Rimsky-Korsakov,Ravel,Debussy,Bartók,Messiaen,Scriabin and other composers. While Debussy’s research focuses on harmony, tonality, and musical structure, this dissertation attempts to explore the octatonic technique in his piano works from the perspective of octatonic.By examining the morphology of each octatonic scale and exploring it in combination with the formal function of the work,we can fully understand the morphology and structural function of the octatonic in Debussy’s piano works. The author first expounds the theoretical connotation and development of the octatonic scale, and discusses the use of the octatonic by different composers.Secondly, taking Debussy’s piano works as an example, the octatonic fragments are examined. This dissertation consists of three parts: introduction, main text and conclusion, and the main text is divided into four chapters: the first chapter summarizes Debussy’s life, creative periodization and his piano works, the second chapter summarizes the theoretical connotation of the octatonic scale and its related historical development, and the third and fourth chapters respectively analyze and summarize the octatonic in Debussy’s 24 Preludes and other piano works. This research contributes to the enrichment and perfection of octatonic theory, increases the depth of research on Debussy’s piano works, and has certain enlightenment significance for the performance of Debussy’s piano works.
