Subtitles refer to words and sentences that appear at the bottom of the screen in a film or TV drama. The main function of the subtitles is to provide related text to promote the understandings of the films or TV dramas.Due to the communication function of the subtitles, subtitle translations play an important role in cross-cultural communications which result in whether or not the audiences can enjoy the story, which is especially true for those films or TV dramas with no dubbing.Empresses in the Palace is a Chinese TV drama released in 2011 in China and its American version in 2015 in America. When it comes to the subtitle translations of this TV drama, different people hold diverse views. Some people believe that this TV drama has been broadcast overseas, and its subtitle translations must be qualified. However, others think that the subtitle translations of this TV drama are just so-so because the "Zhen Huan Style" disappeared.Based on the Register Theory and its three variables—field, mode, and tenor, the present study tries to build an evaluation model to evaluate the translations of the subtitles in this TV drama. This evaluation model requires that the translation should be equal to the original in the register of field, mode, and tenor as much as possible. The research has achieved the following contributions.First,it has set up an evaluation model to judge the quality of the subtitle translations of the TV drama.Second,it has checked the feasibility of the model by analyzing the defects of some poor translations. And third,it has managed to provide better translations by the help of the model.
