Interactional Linguistics is one of the most rapidly developing branches of linguistics in recent years, proposed by Selting and Couper-Kuhlen.The key principle of Interactional Linguistics is to view the structure of language and its use as a corollary of interactive contexts, thus emphasizing the study of interactive conversations.Adverbial conjunctions(shortened as ACs)are words often used in interactive conversations, referring to a class of words that have both modifying and connecting functions. In different contexts, the use of ACs often has certain patterns and characteristics.Previously, scholars have chosen novels with many interactive conversations to study, but there has not been a comparative study. Therefore, based on Interactional Linguistics, this paper chooses Salinger’s novels and their Chinese versions as the corpus for a comparative study of the English-Chinese ACs.The corpus has been selected for this paper comes from Salinger’s major works, including The Catcher in the Rye,Nine Stories,Franny and Zoey, and Raise High the Roof Beam,Carpenters. The English corpus has 227,607 words, while the Chinese corpus has407,745 characters.Interactional Linguistics includes theories such as Conversation Analysis and Cognitive Grammar. This paper combines theories such as Turn-taking and Social Action Format to analyze the frequency and distribution of ACs at the syntactic level. Also,to analyze their interactional functions and collocation mechanism. It has been found that: 1)English ACs can appear anywhere in Turns, while Chinese ACs rarely appear at the end of the Turns.2)Both Chinese and English ACs can be used with their own or other ACs,prepositional phrases or Social Action Format, forming the collocation and co-occurrence mechanism.3)Both English and Chinese ACs have the functions of discourse cohesion and turn-construction,which can be used to express transition, time sequence, explanation,or opening turns, continuing turns and switch turns.4)When ACs appear in different turn positions or are matched with different elements, they have different interactional functions, including but not limited to connecting topics, highlighting information, refuting opinion, etc. This paper aims to study the distribution and collocation of English and Chinese Adverbial conjunctions in Salinger’s works and their Chinese translations,as well as the interactional discourse function they produce.Salinger’s works have many interactive conversations, and the style is more colloquial. At the same time, studying the translations of them can help readers to deeply understand the themes and characters’ thoughts, and at the same time provide readers with a new perspective to appreciate the translations. |
