An Interactional Linguistics Study Of Particle Guan In Xinyang Dialect

The particle guan is used very frequently in daily communication in Xinyang dialect.However,the current research on particle guan has not been studied thoroughly.The existing research results are few,especially from the perspective of Interactional Linguistics.Thus,how to describe and analyze it accurately and further explain its syntactic position and pragmatic functions have become extremely difficult.In view of this,this dissertation regards particle guan as the research object,and makes a comprehensive and systematic description of the interactional functions of particle guan in Xinyang dialect from the perspective of Interactional Linguistics,so as to provide a new perspective for the particle guan and explain the underlying relationship among its functions theoretically.This study will provide a new research perspective for the further study of particle in Xinyang dialect.Under the theoretical framework of Interactional Linguistics,this study mainly adopts the methods of Conversation Analysis and Corpus Methods to analyze the syntactic structures and pragmatic functions of guan based on the self-built spoken corpus of Xinyang dialect.Specifically,this study extracts 8 hours of recordings from10 hours of natural dialogue in 8 different places under the framework of Interactional Linguistics theory.The author uses the extracted recordings to build a small Xinyang dialect corpus of about 30000 words,and makes quantitative statistics on the distribution and use of the particle guan in the corpus,which ensures the authenticity,objectivity and coverage of the research to a certain extent.Then,this study uses qualitative research method to describe the syntactic position,pragmatic function,geographical distribution and formation of the particle guan in Xinyang dialect comprehensively and systematically.The study finds that the particle guan in Xinyang dialect tends to be used among people who have much closer social relations.Among these 8 different places,family is the highest occurring frequency place of guan,which accounts(45:1).And the places where people choose to take public transports are the lowest occurring frequency place of guan,which accounts only(144:1).At the same time,according to the frequency of use of particle guan in different places,the author further finds particle guan has pragmatic functions in spoken discourses,including declarative meaning,imperative meaning and exclamation meaning.Among them,the declarative meaning of particle guan accounts for 64%,the imperative meaning and exclamatory meaning account for only 29% and 7% respectively of the total.In terms of syntactic structures,this study mainly summarizes syntactic positions of guan in Xinyang dialect,which includes “guan is placed before and after personal pronouns”,“guan precedes verb phrases and adjective phrases” and “guan is located in front of the verb-complement phrases” three specific syntactic positions.In terms of pragmatic functions,particle guan have two functions as turn-constructional function and discourse-interactional function,and both of them are interactive and closely related,which can affect context in reverse.In addition,this dissertation also discusses the regional distribution of guan and zhong from east to west in the characteristics of guan-zhong / guan-zhong,and the use range of particle guan is much wider than the distribution of zhong in Xinyang area.Finally,this dissertation reveals the formation of particle guan by exploring the overall usage and its influencing factors.Through a comprehensive analysis and description of particle guan in Xinyang dialect,this dissertation finally makes a conclusion of the whole paper and points out the limitations and prospects for future studies.Therefore,on the one hand,this study can have a new understanding of particle guan from the theoretical level,and on the other hand,it also demonstrates the possibility of combining Interactional Linguistics with dialect research.To some extent,this dissertation makes up for the shortcomings of Xinyang dialect research in Henan province,and also plays a role in the subsequent research of the same type.
