Essentials of Occupational Health Psychology is the work of Christopher J.L.Cunningham,Ph.D.,professor of Psychology and the Industrial-Organizational Psychology Graduate Program Director at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Kristen Jennings Black,Ph.D.,assistant professor of Psychology at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. This book provides a thorough overview of Occupational Health Psychology(OHP)with a focus on empowering readers to take appropriate and sound actions to address the wide range of worker health, safety, and well-being challenges that are present in working settings around the world. The book contains a wealth of psychological terminology as well as psychological theories, models, and interventions. The translation of this book is of great importance for China to learn from the developmental achievements and research methods of Western occupational health psychology and to popularize the knowledge of occupational health psychology. In this report, chapters 4,5 and 6 of Essentials of Occupational Health Psychology are selected for translation, and Nida’s functional equivalence theory is used as a guide for the case study.During the translation process, the author carefully studied the characteristics of the OHP text and made certain reserves of OHP knowledge. The translator found that the OHP text has its own characteristics in terms of vocabulary, syntax and text style, with its strong objectivity, strict wording, professional vocabulary and long and complex sentences, and the special features of its style put forward high requirements for the translator. At the lexical level, the translator summarizes the strategies of accuracy of specialized terminology, specification of vogue concepts and lexical conversion;at the syntactic level, the translator proposes the strategies of transformation of sentence order, sentence segmentation and voice conversion;the translation of the style of the text can be solved by the use of four-character words and keeping a clear and logical structure.Through this translation practice, the translator found that the functional equivalence theory can effectively guide the translation of OHP text.It can provide the translator with translation guidelines to choose the most natural and appropriate translation between English and Chinese according to context, enhance readability, and achieve similar responses from readers of the original text and the target readers. To sum up,this report aims to summarize the main features of OHP text with specific cases and propose effective translation methods. The author hopes that the report will serve as an enlightening reference for future OHP translation.
