With the development of social economy,people’s life pressure is increasing and people’s health is suffering from serious harm.How to live scientifically,develop good living habits and improve the health of the whole people has become a high concern of the whole society.Therefore,learning about the structure and function of the human body and how to eat a healthy diet is not just a compulsory course for medical students.All people should learn about human health in order to better prevent disease and stay healthy.The selected text in this translation practice report is from chapters one to four of A Handbook of Health by Woods Hutchinson,a American physician and health columnist.The chapters chosen by the translator focus on the energy to sustain life—the role of food,the process of digestion of food,what kind of food people should eat,and the role of the major food needed by the body.As a popular science book,A Handbook of Health belongs to an informational text,so its content is mainly to convey information.Through this translation practice,the translator find that there are many technical terms in this kind of text,but the language is easy to understand.In order to facilitate readers to understand,the original author uses some rhetorical devices such as personification in the sentence,which has the characteristics of both scientific text and literary text.Therefore,the readability and accuracy of the target text are the translation goals that the translator must achieve.After reading some translation theories,the translator finally chooses Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory to analyze the text from the lexical and syntactic levels.The translator hopes that the report may be of reference value in the translation of popular health science texts and promote the dissemination of health knowledge.
