This is an English-Chinese translation practice report based on Chapter 3 of The Discovery of Grounded Theory: Strategies for Qualitative Research by Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss from Columbia University. The book mainly introduces the foundations of qualitative research and grounded theory, which provides a method for generating a substantive theory from the bottom-up and presents researchers with a very useful methodology and research procedures for learning about qualitative research, especially for analyzing qualitative data. The aim of the translation is to provide a reference for sociologists and other scholars engaged in nonexperimental social research. The purpose of this practice report is to explore the applicability of communicative theory to sociological texts. Therefore,in the translation practice, under the guidance of Newmark’s text typology theory, the report summarizes the difficulties in the translation and discusses the corresponding solutions and translation techniques through communicative translation method,so as to accurately convey the content and information of the source text and to take target readers’ reading habits into full consideration. The book The Discovery of Grounded Theory is an informative text, which attaches importance to the delivery of information.Newmark’s communicative translation theory is applicable to information text. Therefore,it has a practical guiding significance to this practice report. The report can be divided into four parts. The first part is an introduction to the translation task and translation practice report. In the second part, the process of translation is introduced, including the description of the pre-translation preparation, the translation process and the post-translation quality control. In the third part, the case study is the body part of this practice report, and the report firstly introduces Newmark’s text typology theory and semantic and communicative translation methods. After organizing, analyzing and summarizing the translation practice, the report divides the translation techniques into four major categories, namely, conversion, division, addition and omission, which are illustrated and analyzed by selected examples in translation practice with corresponding solutions proposed. In the fourth part, the report summarizes the gains, limitations and reflections of the translation practice.
