In the new era, legal translation has become the core of China’s foreign-related legal transmission. The accuracy of legal terms,as the top priority,is directly related to the reliability of legal information. However, the research on C-E translated legal terms in procedure laws, the backbone of China’s legal system, finds that improper translated points or mistakes are common in the C-E translated version of Civil Procedure Law of the People’s Republic of China(2021 Amendment),which have rarely drawn attention for countermeasures. The thesis takes the authoritative English version of Civil Procedure Law of the People’s Republic of China(2021 Amendment)as the research object and(US)Federal Rules of Civil Procedure(2020 Amendment)as the main reference.A comparative study reveals that nearly30 improper C-E translated legal terms are found as problems, mainly falling under three headings:(1)failing to match concepts of Chinese terms due to misunderstanding legal meanings,(2)failing to follow professional legal expressions in English-speaking countries,and(3)failing to follow the principle of consistency. In light of professor Liu Fagong’s theoretical points and Susan (?)ar(?)evi(?)’s legal translation theory, this thesis analyzes the causes of legal translation problems with evidence from authority sources before putting forward three countermeasures:(1)seeking matching terms by comparing legal concepts in authoritative legal dictionaries,(2)adopting professional terms by consulting authoritative legal resources,and(3)adopting corresponding terms used in English legal texts to keep consistent. To further refine equivalents-seeking process, such two sub-methods are adopted under the first countermeasure as:(1)adopting terms from similar laws promulgated by Englishspeaking countries to keep concepts exactly or near equivalent,and(2)adopting terms with the closest concepts to Chinese terms to keep concepts partially equivalent.Legal translation practice proves that these three countermeasures can effectively guarantee C-E translated legal terms in Civil Procedure Law of the People’s Republic of China communicable in legal connotation and concepts, thus improving the quality of their English versions for international communication.
