An Analysis Of The English Version Of The Customs Law Of The People's Republic Of China

As a result of the increasing demands for international cooperation, legal translation affects our life in every aspect. Legal translation, therefore, is gaining an increasing momentum. The great significance of legal translation lies not only in the academic field, but also in the economic and social field of China. Although numerous scholars in China and abroad have done much research in legal translation in recent years, there are still lots of issues worth discussion and further research in legal translation.The thesis firstly gives a brief introduction to the significance and purpose of the present study. Then, the author enumerates various translation theories and translation criteria in China and abroad. Based on the various translation theories and criteria, the author makes an attempt to propose specific criteria for legal translation, namely, being faithful to the original content and being compatible with the linguistic features of the target language. For the purpose of illustrating these criteria, the author offers a detailed analysis of the features of the English version of the Customs Law of the People's Republic of China and presents rich embodiments of such features in the English version. Through detailed examples from the English version, the author points out the merits and demerits in the English version, some tentative improvements are also proposed correspondingly, which might be of use in the later revision of the English version.At the end of the thesis, the author concludes that legal translation is not an easy task, but a complicated and painstaking process, and that it requires greater efforts and more profound studies. Through the analysis of the English version, the author endeavors to conduct a preliminary study on legal translation, and make research on the existing problems and regularities in legal translation. It's sincerely hoped that the tentative work will enhance people' better understanding of the English version of the Customs Law, give guidance to legal translation practice, and appeal people to pay more attention to legal translation in the future and make contributions to the improvement of the quality of legal translation in China, so that the goal of more accurate, normative and perfect legal translation will be achieved in China.
