| This translation report is based on Paris on Air by Australian freelance writer and podcaster Oliver Gee.The translator selects the preface and the first chapter of this book as the translation text.In the world where foreign exchanges are frequent, the translator hopes to bring some enlightenment to translators engaged in travel texts through the translation and analysis of this type of texts, which has not been widely spread in China.Based on Peter Newmark’s translation theory on text typology, the translator, taking full account of the characteristics of travel texts, analyzes the source text and overcome the translation difficulties(including the French terminology, readability and the understanding of the text)by using a variety of translation skills(repetition, amplification, omission, conversion, inversion and so on)and tools(the Internet and dictionaries)under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation. For example, the translator translates the French terminology by searching the Internet and dictionaries and makes the text more readable by using translation skills such as repetition, amplification, omission, conversion and inversion.Meanwhile, attention is paid to the coherence and cohesion of the whole discourse. In addition, for the unclear understanding of the text, the translator asks the author for advice directly through social media,so as to make the translation accurate. This translation practice not only gives the translator a deeper understanding of the translation of travel texts and text typology, but also makes the translator experience the local landscape and customs of Paris immersively. At the same time,it also increases the translator’s interest and experience in the translation of travel texts. |
