Abstract/Summary:
This report is based on the translation of a technical periodical named New Scientist, whose target readers are those interested in information about science and technology. The translation of this periodical aims at helping more domestic readers understand more international hot and front events in scientific sector.Scientific English text has the characteristics of rigorous logicality, strictness and conciseness. In this translation project, there are various logical relations in scientific English, the common ones are adversative, causal, progressive and conditional, among which causal relation is the most universal one.The explicit causal relation is easy to identify, which is mostly marked by some obvious causal conjunctions. While the implicit causal relations,on the other hand,is existed in different types of English sentences. For these sentences with implicit causal relation, the translator should identify their covert logic relation accurately by rigorous analysis to get a correct translation. In this translation project, the implicit causal relations are embodied in the following aspects: attributive clauses with implicit causal relation;coordinate sentences with implicit causal relation;passive sentences with implicit causal relation and simple sentences with implicit causal relation. To solve the difficulties in the material, this translation project adopts Cohesion and Coherence Theory as the theoretical guidance, and the tactics being adopted are as follows:(1)For attributive clauses, the tactic of rearrangement of clause order is adopted;(2)for coordinate sentences, the tactic of semantic reorganization is adopted;(3)for passive sentences, the tactic of voice conversion is adopted;(4)for simple sentences, the tactic of words substitution is adopted. These tactics can not only explicit the implicit causal relation while achieving the cohesion and coherence of the sentences, but also improve the translation quality significantly. The project proves that the strategies above can effectively solve the translation difficulty of sentences with implicit causal relation and provide some insights for the coherent translation of such sentences in scientific English in the future.
