A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Metaphors In The Leadership Strategy And Tactics:Field Manual

Since the 21 st century,the study of metaphor translation has been developing rapidly.However,there is still a large gap with studies of metaphor translation between home and abroad.The literature analysis reveals that the history of metaphor translation studies in China is not long,and there is much room for development and improvement in terms of theoretical application,research fields and translation strategies.Therefore,the translation practice will focus on metaphorical translation.The translation practice report text is selected from Leadership Strategy and Tactics:Field Manual.This text contains a lot of metaphors.It is well known that the proper translation of metaphors will directly affect the accuracy of the message to be conveyed in the text.Therefore,the focus of analysis in this translation practice is which translation strategy and translation method can make the original text and the translated text match perfectly in terms of content and form.Guided by the Conceptual Metaphor Theory from the perspective of Cognitive Linguistic,this report focuses on the translation of metaphors in English text.This report classifies the translation strategies of metaphor that appear in this translation practice into three kinds: maintaining the vehicles,transferring the vehicles and abandoning the vehicles.When the metaphorical meaning and vehicles of words and phrases in Chinese and Western cultures are the same,the vehicles should be maintained;when different metaphorical images are mapped to the same target domain and no corresponding source language image can be found in the target language,the vehicles should be switched to find similar metaphorical images in the target domain;due to cultural differences,thinking differences and cultural gaps,the metaphorical image of the metaphor can neither be maintained nor replaced,so the metaphor should be abandoned and translate its meaning directly.The purpose of this paper is to provide some reference for the translation of metaphors in English texts in the future,and to enrich the domestic research on metaphor translation and to propose some practical translation strategies and methods.This paper provides some new ideas and methods for other translators,so as to make the translation of English texts more standardized and more understandable.
