E-C Translation Report On Sci-Tech Text Under The Guidance By Newmark’s Translation Theory

Technical text plays a vital role in modern life.With the rapid development of technologies,a technical text has become increasingly significant in our daily life.Technical materials such as user manuals,technical reports,references and so on are indispensable for our everyday life.Technical texts provide people valuable information in a straightforward manner.Therefore,technical texts sh ould be written in plain and clear language in order to maximize the informative function of the text.In addition,the accuracy of the information delivery must be ensured during the translation.The source text is selected from the book Internet of Things for Smart Cities Technologies,Big Data and Security.The chosen material can be categorized as technical text,it is also a typical information text.Informative text transmits information and facts,which is characterized by accuracy and succinctness.At lexical level,the source text is abundant of ICT(Information Communication Technology)terms and acronyms.At syntactic level,passive sentences and nominalization are used extensively.In the process of translation,the translator studied Peter Newmark’s translation theory,the translator mainly adopts the communicative translation theory as this translation task falls into the category of informative texts.However,for some terms that appeared in the text,the translator tries to be faithful to the original furthest from words order to the structure of the text.According to the characteristics of translation theory,the translator chooses semantic translation to guide the translation task so as to keep the precision in semantic scope.Newmark’s translation theory is applied to the analyses on examples from the translation task,which discusses the translation methods for terms,for passive voice,for nominalization structures,for long and complex sentences and for text,related techniques such as literal translation,conversion,amplification,restructuring.To summarize,based on Newmark’s translation theory,this translation report is focus on the applicable translation methods and translating thought process,discussing and finding better solutions for translating technical texts.On account of communicative translation must be faithful to the target and the reader of the target text while semantic translation obeys the source text and the author,they both have limitations.The combination of the two makes the translation more accurate.Through the translation practice,the translator finds that Newmark’s translation theory provides strong theoretical support for the translation of scientific and technical texts,which helps translators to use appropriate methods and strategies in translation practice and fulfill the communicative function of translation.In addition,it is expected that the translated text will provide a useful reference for relevant practitioners working in IoT applications for smart city.
