A Post-Editing Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of "Report On The Investigation Of The Fatal Crush Accident On The General Cargo Vessel Karina C"

Since the 21 st century,shipping industry has developed vigorously with the deepening of trade and economic globalization.However,due to the gradual increase of maritime trade,the frequency of maritime accidents is also increasing.As one of the major member states of the International Maritime Organization(IMO),China should actively take corresponding responsibilities and obligations and provide the IMO with maritime accident investigation reports in English.Therefore,the Chinese-English translation of foreign maritime accident investigation reports can be used as a reference for Chinese maritime accident investigators to write English maritime accident investigation reports and translators to translate relevant materials.This translation practice report is from the research project of Dalian Maritime University commissioned by the Ministry of Transport.This report takes the case of machine translation and post-editing of the Investigation Report on the Fatal Crushing Accident of the General Cargo Vessel Karina C as the research object.Guided by communicative translation theory and readers’ reading receptus,the report adopts the research methods of theoretical orientation,literature reading and case analysis,summarizes several types of machine translation errors from punctuation format,vocabulary,phrase and syntax.In punctuation format,there are some problems in machine translation,such as the incorrect use of book names and parentheses.At the lexical level,there are mistranlations or omissions of terms,abbreviations,articles and pronouns in machine translation.At the phrasal level,machine translation errors are mainly phrasal mistranslation.At the syntactic level,there are mainly voice and word order errors.In view of these types of errors,translators mainly adopt post-translation editing strategies,such as combined translation,partial translation,addition translation,word order adjustment and word meaning conversion,to correct machine translation errors and form accurate translation.It is hoped to provide reference for the practice of post-translation editing of such texts in the future.
