| XI JINPING: THE GOVERNANCE OF CHINA,a collection of 79 speeches by General Secretary Xi Jinping,is a concentrated expression of the central leadership’s philosophy of governance and approach to governing, and is an authoritative work on the further study and application of Marxism in contemporary China. The original language text uses a large number of metaphors and Chinese-specific terms that reflect Chinese history and national politics.Through these metaphorical rhetoric and distinctive Chinese phrases, the general and obscure political language can be made more vivid and concrete.Political language can reflect a country’s values and ideology, and is an important factor in building a country’s image. The shaping of a country’s image has a direct impact on the construction of its international discourse, which reflects the weight and influence of a country in the power structure of the international community. The metaphors used by Chinese leaders, the media and the public in the new era are becoming an important strategy for reflecting the will of the state and building the image of the country. In the process of Chinese and Korean translation, how to accurately translate metaphors is a difficult task for translators and a key to the quality of the translation. The text of XI JINPING: THE GOVERNANCE OF CHINA contains a large number of metaphorical expressions, which can be well understood by Chinese readers due to the language environment, but there are certain difficulties for Korean readers. Therefore, this study aims to make an in-depth analysis of the metaphors in Xi Jinping on the Governance of China with the help of association theory, with the aim of narrowing this reading barrier for Korean readers, which has important research value and practical significance. The study is based on the theory of relevance and uses the metaphors in XI JINPING: THE GOVERNANCE OF CHINA.Based on the relevance theory, this study uses the 17 speeches of Xi Jinping on the Governance of the XI JINPING: THE GOVERNANCE OF CHINA in Chinese and Korean to analyse and discuss the translation strategies used, examining the translation techniques used by the translators, the output effect and the factors affecting the translation strategies. The statistical results show that there are 595 uses of metaphors and 10 types of metaphors in the 17 speeches;the most frequent ones are building metaphors(26.72%),journey metaphors(13.78%),war metaphors(13.78%)and family metaphors(11.6%);in terms of translation strategies, translators tend to use the same semantic metaphors to express themselves.Analysing the metaphorical translation strategies in XI JINPING:THE GOVERNANCE OF CHINA from the perspective of association theory reiterates the powerful explanatory power of relevance theory for metaphorical translation. It therefore also requires the translator to search for the best association between the two languages in the translation process and to stand in the original language context to fully understand the original content, with a view to enabling the target language audience to obtain the best contextual effect. This study consists of four main sections.Chapter 1 is the introductory part of this study. This chapter mainly elaborates on the purpose and necessity of the study, and provides a specific analysis of the general status of metaphorical translation research and the status of the research on association theory at home and abroad.Chapter 2 is focuses on the textual features, metaphorical types and their frequency of occurrence in XI JINPING: THE GOVERNANCE OF CHINA.Chapter 3 is the case study section, which is the core part of this study. This chapter uses the original Chinese text and the Korean translation of XI JINPING: THE GOVERNANCE OF CHINA as the corpus to conduct a concrete case study on metaphorical translation strategies.Chapter 4 is the concluding part of this study. This chapter summarises the overall content of the study, analyses the shortcomings and limitations of the study, and provides an outlook for future research on metaphor in translation. |
