During the Ming and Qing Dynasties,academies developed to the northwest and northeast.In the Ming Dynasty,Ningxia was dominated by the military,and Shuofeng academy tried to cultivate talents with both civil and military skills according to local conditions.In the early Qing Dynasty,the political situation in Ningxia tended to be stable,local officials focused more on literature and education,foreign scholars and local gentry jointly lectured in the academy,which led to the rapid development of Ningxia’s academy.After the Hui uprising during the Tongzhi Period,Ningxia academy played a certain role in naturalizing the Hui people and stabilizing the society.There were academies such as Guiru academy,which specialized in Hui children.In the late Qing Dynasty,many academies in Ningxia were transformed into schools,which contributed to the modernization of education in Ningxia.Ningxia is located in the northwest frontier,with complex ethnic relations and difficult long-term social stability.Under many unfavorable conditions,Ningxia Academy is doomed to be unable to compare with the mainland in terms of scale and quantity.However,it is precisely because of its unique geographical location,the historical background of frequent wars,and the social structure of Han and Hui and other ethnic minorities living together,that Ningxia Academy with the characteristics of frontier areas was finally formed.This paper will take the ancient academies in Ningxia today as the research object,dig deeply relevant historical materials,to explore the founding background,development process,teaching and selection of headmasters,source and use of funds and academy reform,so as to have a comprehensive understanding of the historical position of ancient academies in the social development of Ningxia.
