The gentry class is a special social group accompanied by the imperial examination system, which plays an important role in the development of Chinese society and history.Their most prominent social influence is the Jiangnan society in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, especially Suzhou. This paper focuses on the influence of the gentry class in the Qing Dynasty on the evolution of the spatial characteristics of the ancient city of Suzhou. From the perspective of the family in the gentry class, this paper selects the representative Pan’s clan in Suzhou as the research object, and deduces the influence of the gentry class composed of many similar gentry families on the ancient city space from the development and influence of the family in the ancient city of Suzhou. The author hopes to strengthen the connection between social stratum research and urban space research from the perspective of architecture, combined with the research methods of cultural anthropology and sociology. The main body of the paper is divided into six chapters. The first chapter is the introduction.By combing and analyzing the relevant research results at home and abroad,it puts forward the problem of relative separation between family research and Suzhou urban space research, clearly takes the gentry class and the spatial characteristics of Suzhou ancient city as the research object, presents the relationship between them, and determines the research method and technical route. The second chapter defines the gentry and its development process, and discusses the development history of the representative families-the two pan families,as well as the general situation of the social structure and the spatial structure and form of Suzhou in the Qing Dynasty. The third and fourth chapters mainly study the influence of the Pan’s clan and the gentry on the space of the ancient city. The third chapter discusses its influence on the development of the spatial characteristics of the ancient city of Suzhou from the perspective of the Pan’s clan through direct and indirect influence. The direct impact level includes living space, commercial space, leisure and cultural space and social welfare space; The indirect influence is mainly discussed from the constituent elements of cultural gene and the influence mechanism of different aspects. The fourth chapter further analyzes the relationship between the gentry class composed of gentry families and the development of the spatial characteristics of the ancient city of Suzhou from the perspective of gentry class and a more macro perspective. The fifth chapter studies the influence of the gentry architectural heritage on the current ancient city space protection.Although the gentry have withdrawn from the historical stage, the gentry architectural heritage left in the Qing Dynasty still affects the current ancient city space protection. It analyzes its value research, cognitive mode, protection strategy and individual protection and utilization mode from macro to micro levels. The sixth chapter summarizes the full text, puts forward the innovation and deficiency of this paper, and the prospect of follow-up research.
